First, I need to say that your comments on my "
moving to Austin" post were so fun to read, and completely reaffirmed what a good move this will be for us. Thank you! Over the last few days, I've taken to Twitter to seek out Austin suggestions of all sorts {
food, drink, salons, you name it}, and let me tell you: I could certainly move without social media, but it sure is making things a lot easier! And I'm getting to "meet" so many new people. What a resource!
I got all sorts of great suggestions, and before I forget {
and in case they're useful to anyone else out there in Blogland}, I'm posting them here. I expect this will be the first post in a series - there is so much to do in Austin and I'm certainly not done asking about it!
Laura at Just Life recommended:
The Oasis on Lake Travis for brunch:
Mt. Bonnell in Covert Park - great views from the highest point in Austin {775 feet}:
South Congress Avenue {SoCo} for vintage shopping and lots of culture:
Beantown Prepster at The Beantown Prepster: Part Deux recommended:
Sandra Bullock's restaurant
Bess's Bistro:

The
Milk & Honey Spa {2 locations in Austin!}:
Meghan {@the_Meggo} pointed out that
Kendra Scott's flagship store is in Austin {
I LOVE her Elle, Danielle, Sky, and now the Dayla earrings}:
Nicole at LiveHappy8 recommended the
Parkside restaurant {
1/2 price bubbly and oysters on Wednesdays? What's not to love?}:
And last, but certainly not least:
Kate from Elefantitas Alegres, who grew up in Austin, has been a tremendous help to us in deciding where we should live - her neighborhood descriptions and recommendations have been a life-saver!
Do you have any recommendations? If you've never been, what would you want to see? Feel free to share - I'm all ears! You can
email me,
tweet me, or leave a comment here.
Thanks again to Laura, Beantown Prepster, Meghan, Nicole, and Kate!

I lived in Austin for 12 years and worked for the Austin American-Statesman --the daily newspaper-- before expatriating last year. It's a great city. Not as great as it was --too many people too soon makes it a little hipster hellish-- but it's the only place I'd want to live west of Mississippi. I have a few attorney friends in Austin if you'd ever want introductions. Good luck, and take it from me, South Congress is for suckers and tourists. Try South Lamar or South First Street. When I was there last, they still had a little soul.
@Rhiannon at After Plumcake I've heard that it's been growing pretty quickly, but we won't be contributing to the hipster contingent! Thanks for suggesting South Lamar and South First Street - I'll certainly add them to the list. And any connections are most welcome; feel free to email me about your friends!
Do you ever read the blog Story of My Life? Jenni (the writer) lives in Austin and posts lots of reviews of cafes, restaurants, and little shops all around town. Here's her blog if you want to check it out (if you don't already) - http://storyofmylifetheblog.blogspot.com/
@Stephanie I've never heard of that blog, but just checked it out and it looks great! Thank you so much for sharing! I've been looking for Austin bloggers and you must have read my mind :)
