Since we were married in October 2010,
What began as this:
Is now this:
Oh, happy day. It's now affectionally called the Palm Beach Room. Hubs bravely accepted the arrival of coral Trina Turk trellis bed dressings - the rest of the condo is completely lacking in any shade of pink, so he had to let me have one room to serve as an Estrogen Palace.
The mirror and the lamps are Home Goods finds. No idea what their brand/origin might be; no distinctive markings on either.
As you can see, the mirror was originally black but I've been wishing it were white ever since seeing this photo from Glitter Guide's article on Erika Brechtel's home:
This weekend, after much mulling, I finally decided to paint it. First step: tear the paper backing away, pry back the staples, pull up the composite support board and discover {much to my relief} that the mirror was one big sheet of glass that could be removed, making the paint job much easier.
Out came the glass and it was time for spray paint! Several thin coats {per Sherry's spray-painting advice on Young House Love} of primer:
And about four thin, even coats of paint with 1 hour drying time between each coat:
And the mirror is now white. Despite the bevy of nooks and crannies, those many thin coats of paint paid off - coverage ended up being nice and even at the end of the day.
Much better! I'd paint just about everything white, if I could - I find dark rooms depressing, for the most part. Bright rooms are better for one's mental health.
I should note that I'm not so a cruel wife that I'd make my husband sleep in a pink bed for too long. The girl-power bedding is being replaced with something a little more gender-neutral {just ordered this set}, and the white, white, white will match anything, which is nice.
I'm considering painting a thin gold border somewhere along the frame to give it a little bit of a pop, but for now, I'm loving the blinding white. It's eyeball Prozac.

You are funny, eyeball prozac indeed!!! You've made a really great change and the mirror was pure genius... I would never have thought of removing the back, just would have painted by brush, but of course you are right.. anyway, love your blog and all the ideas, just think you are very clever and funny and inspirational.. loved the colour of the new bedding you ordered... have a great week..j
I love the after! And that bedding is to die for--great job!
@janzi Oh Janzi, thank you so much for stopping by! What kind words - and I'm glad you approve of the new bedding!
@HMC Thanks, HMC! Love your blog so much! If I had my druthers, the entire place would be coral, white, and turquoise!
Looks great! I'm a fan of rooms outfitted in white & bright and cheery rooms too. No dark & moody decor for me! The new bedding is gorgeous, I love the pattern & the colors!
@yours truly, melissa Bright rooms ARE the best! And I'm excited about the new bedding, too - still pretty but not such a testosterone killer :)
This looks fantastic! Love your make over, esp. that spruced up mirror.
I had those Ikea lamps in my college apartment, too, right down to the weird blue and white floral shade. Too funny!
@Julie I'm pretty sure I had them in college, too! I remember really loving the different shades to chose from - ha! Onwards and upwards, right? ;)
I love the mirror, and your finesse for when to buy and when to diy. I do like the pink bedding, though, so I hope it won't be gone forever...maybe reappearing in a future homestead?
@~Appetite for Conversation~ You bet I'm hanging on to the pink bedding - maybe a future guest room, so you might be able to see it again! :)
Oh, I love this room. Did you paint your nightstands too, or are they new? We have a BROWN dresser and a BROWN bed and adorable white nightstands, and I'm wondering what my level of DIY ability is, because I would really love to paint the dresser.
@Mama Bub I considered painting the nightstands, but they were a little too bulky, so the white ones are new! We also have a dark dresser that I might try to paint - the trick is DIY-ing something that isn't too expensive or an heirloom...that way there's no guilt if it doesn't go perfectly! I think Centsational Girl has great tips for furniture painting; here's a post on dresser painting: http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2011/07/my-bamboo-is-peacock-blue/ Go for it! :)
