On Making New Friends

I have a confession to make: the combined effects of (1) moving to a new city far away from friends and family and (2) an ever-increasing reliance on social media have almost made me forget how to make new IRL {in-real-life} friends.  I still fall into the category of "newlywed" {I think, since we've yet to have our second anniversary}, so spending time with Mr. Curieuse still trumps just about everything, but the man works from 5am to 8pm weekdays and sometimes a little on weekends {not that I'm complaining - he's a total rockstar and I support him 100%}.  My best friends live Back East or in Northern California.  I love my family and talk to them as much as I can, but shoot - there's no getting around the fact that we're in different time zones.  I have a few local girlfriends, most notably AMA, but nowhere near as many as I'd like.  So...

I asked a girl out on a date.  It happened.

BHS and I met at an office going-away party - her hubby works with mine.  We hit it off perfectly and by the end of the evening had exchanged phone numbers.  A few weeks went by and I decided "what the heck," and  asked her to lunch and mani-pedi's.  I'm fairly certain this is how good old-fashioned friendships start, but these days I'm more accustomed to adding a new acquaintance as a "Friend" on Facebook rather than actually spending face time with them.  We spent a few days swapping texts and "date" ideas, and before I knew it,  we were having our first glass of wine!

She's also from the other side of the country with no family nearby, and her hubby works just about the same crazy schedule as mine.  Needless to say, we had a fabulous time {lunch lasted two hours}, and when she picked pink polish for her pedicure, I knew we were going to be real friends.

I love social media {do you follow me on Twitter? Pinterest? Instagram?  please do and I'll follow you back!}, but nothing trumps an honest-to-goodness girl date.

How do you make new friends?

That's such great idea, I have very few friends as two of them passed away and unfortunately without a dog or kids or full time office job, it seems impossible to meet anyone around these parts. I was just thinking that I would love to sit in new company for a while.

Good for you! As an adult, I find that it's definitely harder to make friends. My husband, on the other hand, has a million friends. He's naturally social and it helps that we are in the town he grew up in. I have a handful of really great girlfriends, but they are now mothers to young kiddos so unfortunately, are not as available as they use to be. I've had to reach out of my comfort zone and try to make new friends. Luckily, I've found a few!

I have been a reader for a while and think I may have commented once or twice but totally just requested to follow you on twitter.

I find that I get to be so bad at commenting when I'm sneaking some time to catch up on blogs at work! But twitter? I can always sneak on my phone! ha!

Good for you and you friend-date! I need to be better about asking people on those!

One word will sufficiently sum up my thoughts on this entire thing: SAMSIES!!! I've made a few friends here in England butttt they ALL have come from blogging. I'm hopeless at IRL friend-making anymore.

@Katie Thanks for stopping by, Katie! And I completely fall into the same habit of not commenting as often as I should - thank goodness for Twitter, right? :)

@Beantown Prepster Thank goodness I'm not the only one! It feels totally bizarre to have to make a conscious effort to make IRL friends. Luckily, wine helps dispense with the initial awkwardness!
